At the time, the organization had a total of 11 founders. Among them were Greg Brockman, who is currently the President of the organization; Sam Altman, who is now its Chief Executive Officer; and Elon Musk. Elon Musk later left the organization.
On November 30, 2022, this institution introduced ChatGPT, bringing about a revolutionary change in the history of information technology. After that, everything began to change rapidly. Within just two months, ChatGPT reached 100 million people. Within three years, it achieved the milestone of more than 800 million active weekly users. Since the launch of ChatGPT by OpenAI, unprecedented changes have taken place in technology, society, and the economy. Today, it is no longer limited to being just a chatbot; rather, it has become a groundbreaking invention that has brought artificial intelligence within the reach of ordinary people.
From smartphone voice assistants and social media news feeds to disease diagnosis in healthcare and self-driving cars, artificial intelligence is now present at every level of technology. ChatGPT and other generative models have sparked a new wave of excitement in the technology world by demonstrating the ability to create human-like text, generate videos, draw images, and write code. According to a 2024 report in Scientific Reports, it is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish between poetry generated by artificial intelligence and poetry emerging from the hearts of human poets. Artificial intelligence can now perform tasks such as operating systems management, sending emails, and making phone calls with a level of precision comparable to that of a skilled project manager or HR officer.
However, this artificial intelligence is proficient only in specific tasks or a limited range of fields. Each system is exceptional within its own domain, but none can think beyond the boundaries of its specialization. To further advance the use of AI in the future, scientists are working on Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
Scientists say that this new Artificial General Intelligence will not merely excel at a particular task; rather, it will possess the ability to understand, learn, reason, and creatively perform any intellectual task much like a human being. In other words, it is expected to achieve human-level intelligence.
Artificial General Intelligence will possess genuine creativity. It may be capable of discovering new scientific theories, creating entirely new forms of art and music, and even generating novel philosophical ideas. It will not only recognize patterns but also create them.
AGI is envisioned as a form of artificial intelligence capable of performing any intellectual task that a human can perform whether understanding language, recognizing images, creative writing, solving problems, or even learning independently.
This would represent a far more fundamental advancement than current AI systems and could create one of the most transformative chapters in the history of human civilization. The new AGI is expected to be versatile, autonomous, and capable of learning new things on its own.
Scientists state that we are still living in the era of Narrow AI. Existing models such as GPT-4 and DeepSeek R1 learn from vast amounts of information, but they are not yet capable of true generalization or self-adaptation. Researchers are progressing toward AGI through approaches such as neurosymbolic AI, self-learning architectures, and reinforcement learning. Sam Altman has stated that AGI could potentially arrive by 2028.
