Lullaby

SOUVIK Chakraborty

Bardhaman, West Bengal

Night falls early in the City of Joy
An ominous silence reigns supreme
Busy lives come to a standstill
Despair invades myriad dreams.

The star-studded sky offers no respite
The northerly breeze blows awfully cold
Hopes are shattered beyond repair
Numbness preys on the young and old.

Yet somewhere, a loving mother puts her child to bed
And prays to the angels to make everything all right
She kisses his forehead and whispers softly—
‘I am here for you. Now lights out, sleep tight!’
