Jatish Gobinda Jana Kolkata, Contents | The drummer
leaves when the idols are gone, Returning home
where his hardships live on. Yet he comes back
again on Panchami day, Tightening old
drum straps before he plays. From Panchami
until Dashami's end, He forgets all
the worries that home may send. Lost in the
rhythm of beat after beat, His music makes
every celebration complete. Perhaps his home
is in some distant place, In Sutiya, Gajan,
or a village we can't trace. Wherever he
lives, his drum seems to say, "Dhyam-kurakur-kur!"
throughout the day. For a few festive
days we dance to his tune, But how does he
spend the rest of the monsoon? How does he live
through the long passing year, When the sound of
the festival is nowhere near? The drummer
leaves when the immersion is through, And works
on a job card the whole year through.
