Closed Room

KALYAN Bhattacharya

Bardhaman, West Bengal

Humans now wear tiger skins,
And crocodile masks within.
The tiger’s forest fades away,
The earth has lost its green and gray.
For selfish needs the trees are gone,
The woods destroyed, the life withdrawn.
Ponds are filled and flats arise,
Can people live beneath these skies?
Dark smoke veils the heavens high,
No blossoms bloom, no colors lie.
The earth’s wrapped up in paper bright,
Yet humans fade from nature’s light.
The tiger knows not, nor the bird,
These bitter truths remain unheard.
But we who know, still shut our door,
In silent rooms, we care no more.
Let’s learn again this world we see,
To serve mankind in unity.
Man does not live for self alone,
We’ll say it loud, let it be known.
