Alone

SUJATA Chatterjee

Uttar Dinajpur, West Bengal

In the corner alone, with vacant eyes she sighs,

“Where should I go?” she cries.

No mind for work, head bowed in shame,

Tears fall freely like rain.

Why should I stay, dear, it’s time to depart,

Wherever my eyes may start!

Kids these days, what’s their state?

They don’t seem scared, not even late!

Ghosts and goblins, thin or fat,

Black spirits, and demons sat,

They come and say, “Fear not, my friend,

What’s wrong? Truth we’ll lend.”

Crying in the corner, shy to declare,

I went for two boys, to catch them there.

Thought they’d be scared, as is their way,

To make the job easier day by day.

But in their hands, whatever was flat,

Flared up bright, imagine that!

They laugh at me, come sit close by,

Let’s snap a selfie, and let it fly.
