Rhymes

Ratan Acharya

Agartala, Tripura

Rhymes are sweet to hear and sing,

Keeping time with every beat.

Morning, evening, noon or spring

Every season makes them sweet.

Children's hearts and young minds too

Dance with joy at every line.

By the pond, across the fields,

Riverbanks or winding paths they shine.

Even old folks miss them not,

Whether resting home at ease.

At the market or a gathering,

Rhymes can fill their hearts with glee.

Splashing, swaying, beat by beat,

Boatmen dip their oars in time.

Baul singers blend their melodies

With the music of a rhyme.

By the riverside, a shepherd's flute

Draws fair Radha with its strain.

Who can tell what sweet excuse

Brings the village bride for water at noon again?

To a gentle rhyming tune,

A mother dots her baby's brow.

Rhythm, melody, and joyful verse

Have filled the world through ages now.
