Hush now, don’t whisper, what’s all this fuss? The royal treasury’s robbed, what a terrible loss! All the coins locked safe in a chest so tight “Just one coin’s gone!” scoffs a voice in spite. In a corner of the garden, a tailorbird’s nest, There lay that coin, shining its best, The little bird smiles, holding it fast, While the king coughs in grief, his sorrow vast. In great delight, the bird sings her rhyme, “Oh, what glory, royal wealth is mine!” Hearing her words, the king shakes in fear, “Bring back the coin, bring it right here!” The coin returns to the treasury grand, But joy flies off like grains of sand, The cheeky bird now speaks her mind, “I shouldn’t have brought it back,” she opines. “Catch that bird! Fry it today!” The king commands in furious sway, But fooled instead, he eats a frog Outwitted, lost in his own fog. The queens lose their noses to the royal blade, While the bird sings on, carefree and unafraid, In gleeful tones, her song rings clear, Mocking the king who rages in fear. “I’ll swallow you whole!” the king declares, The soldiers tremble, caught unawares, A shaking hand, a careless strike The king’s own nose is cut alike. And so the bird just laughs and sings, “Enough for today, O mighty king!”
