The Naughty Boy

Krishnendu Kuili

Yes, yes, Kantababu’s sons are two, Calm and quiet, proper too. Morning comes, yet never they Dive in pond to start the day. Brilliant minds at books and school, Obedient boys, so very cool. Never tear a page or sheet, Books stay clean, nice and neat. Games they play quite well, no doubt, Best on field when they’re about. Those who fail to score a goal Never dare to come back home. Food and drink with manners tight, Nothing extra bites their bite. Bellies sealed like jars well tied Where’s the joy they keep inside? Humble, gentle, silent face, Always still in every place. But if someone pokes too near, Popcorn tempers burst out clear. Who throws stones and at whose door? Who sneaks behind, who keeps the score? Watch the lamp that brightly gleams Darkness pools beneath its beams. If this is goodness, pure and prime, Solid gold of highest kind, Then hear me out, dear Ma, I’m a naughty boy, ha ha!
