The Food of Dreams

SHYAMACHARAN Karmakar

Kolkata, West Bengal

Last night, oh what a feast I had!

Shibe, the taste still makes me glad.

Meat, pulao, kheer, sweets galore—

Such flavors, I wish for more!

Shibe asked, "Where did you dine?

Who fed you such a meal divine?

Or did you sneak into some place,

And steal this food with silent grace?"

Fotik laughed, "Believe me, friend,

No theft or crime did I intend.

If stealing was my only way,

Would I be begging every day?

Who would serve such pricey treats?

No one’s that kind on these streets!

I walk the honest path, you see,

That feast came in a dream to me!"
